Project summary

Rationale and relevance:
Despite the EU sets integrated settlement development (ISD) as guiding principle in settlement/urban developments, there is no higher education course in ISD in the cross border area. Whilst the practicing profession has relevant and expanding experiences and knowlegde based on a place-based particularities of the border region, the right ISD implementation endeavours are not supported by the knowledge centres of border zone higher education organisations.

Justification of component:
As joint research activities and educational course from the backbone of the project, it promotes enlargement of specific local knowledge base as regards ISD, based on built architecture values of border region, in accordance with the 4.1 specific objective of the Programme.

Contribution to overall and specific objectives of the programme:
Overall objective of ISD Uni project is jointly developing and delivering an ISD pilot course for increasing the educational offer of concerned local higher education institutions and strengthening their competences/knowledge centres. The project therefore fosters improvement of communication between higher educational institutions by improving the role of educational institutions as intellectural centres for increasing the specific knowledge base in the region. By doing so it contributes to overall and specific objectives of the programme.
Location, duration, target groups:
Project activities are carried out in the border zone, with locations of activities in Pécs, Koprivnica and Varasdin. NUTS III units of Baranya, Virovitičko-podravska and Varaždinska are involved into the project. ISD Uni project lasts 16 months, project duration starts in February 2017 and ends in May 2018. ISD pilot course is targeted to the spring university semester of the 2017/2018 educational year. Direct target groups are university students; architects, urban-territorial planners, civil-engineers; lecturers and staff of beneficiaries;
indirect ones represented by staff and decision makers of local municipalities, and by further higher education organisations.

Role of responsible beneficiaries:
Partnership is led by University of Pécs and includes University North, Department for Civil Engineering and Baranya County Government (BMÖ). On the ground ISD practices are provided by BMÖ and ISD related Croatian expereinces by University North. Academic studies and ISD pilot course are based on these experiences and focus on six thematic areas (ISD methodology and Good Practices, settlement investment, built areas, transport, green areas, sustainable architecture and vision). All beneficiaries take part in all project activities.

Expected outputs and results to be achieved:
Outputs: 4 Proj. man. meetings, 3 laptops, 1 kick-off, 1 final conf. with 1-1 press confs, A3 posters, 1 promotion material, 3 webpages, 2 press releases with 3-3 media appearances, 2 study visits, 1 book of ISD academic studies, 2 cross-border workshops for ISD profession, 1 ISD curriculum, 1 ISD pilot course developed and 2 times implemented, 1 ISD Uni sustain. report.
Results: increase in number of experts of ISD (36 students+professionals), increase in number of newly established higher educational cooperations (1, Pécs and North Universities).
Cross-border character and benefit:
One new cooperation between border area educational organisations is prepared and piloted in ISD. ISD curriculum takes into consideration needs of common border area in terms of cross-border built environment. Social impact that direct target group members get to know each other, their skills, ISD competences and interests. By this relevant higher educ. knowledge centres get stronger. Private and public sector in border area benefit from ISD based investments. Through ISD project inclusion of roma and of disagvantaged groups is addressed.
